THE PRINCESS BRIDE (1987) ****

As far as movies go, this one is in my all-time top five. I love this movie. It is just about the most perfect pick-me-up, feel-good movie I’ve ever seen. If ever I’m feeling down, for whatever reason, I can just pop this movie in and it never fails to make me feel better. Everyone should see it, and it’s great for the whole family.

Farm-boy Westley (Cary Elwes) must leave his love, Buttercup (Robin Wright) in order to make his fortune overseas so that they can be married. Unfortunately his ship is attacked by the Dread Pirate Roberts, who never takes survivors. Later that same year, Prince Humperdinck (Chris Sarandon) chooses Buttercup to be his princess bride, but she does not love him. When she is kidnapped, the prince tries to track down and discover who the culprits are, and who else is after her.

Written by William Goldman, based on his adaptation of a book by S. Morgenstern, the story and dialogue is clever, funny, satirical, and touching. What other movie can boast that it has fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, death, lies, true love, and miracles? A real treat!
