Film-Buff Movie Reviews

THE MATRIX (1999) ****

This has got to be one of the all-time coolest movies ever. I can't really find anything wrong with it. Even Keanu Reeves' performance is good, though some have criticized it as not being that good, he doesn't always have the best lines to work with. The script is very smart and hip, although it takes at least two viewings of the film to really understand what's going on. There is a lot of information to absorb in the first sitting. The action sequences are very stylized and look incredible. Like John Woo, the Wachowski Brothers use lots of slow-motion to accentuate the action and give it a surreal feeling. The hand-to-hand combat and martial arts sequences, on the other hand are very fast, if not sped up, with the occasional suspended image to demonstrate how the laws of gravity can be bent or even broken. It's a feast for the eyes. The special effects are phenomenal and quite worthy of the Oscar they won. There are lots of things we have never really seen before.

Thomas Anderson (who also goes by the hacker alias "Neo") played by Keanu Reeves is a computer software writer/hacker. He is called upon by a mysterious character, Morpheus (Lawrence Fishburne), to be a witness to the truth and avoid being prosecuted for hacking by "Federal Agents". As all of the events seem very mysterious and strange, Neo is skeptical and gets caught by the Feds. What ensues is even stranger to Neo and he's not always quite sure if he's dreaming or if he's awake or if his reality is what it really is. Morpheus believes Neo to be the Chosen One that will lead the fight against the oppressive "computers" that have taken over the world and enslaved mankind.
