ERIN BROCKOVICH (2000) ***1/2

Julia Roberts, in the title role, is fantastic. She has put her whole heart and soul into this film. Brockovich is a single mother who pulls no punches when it comes to expressing her opinion, and finds it hard to make ends meet. Turned down from every job she inquires about because she's doesn't have the training or experience, she decides to go to a small law firm and leave with a job. She has an incredible talent for getting what she wants when given the chance to work her magic. She soon becomes involved in a real estate case that has some puzzling medical bills in the file. Using her power of persuasion (her breasts, as she puts it) and her determination, she digs and digs and finds out what's really going on. It's not just a simple real estate case anymore.

Albert Finney as Ed Masry, who hires Brockovich in his private firm, is also wonderful. They couldn't be more different from each other. He's very careful ... after all, he's a lawyer. She is not a lawyer and wants to make things right, regarlessly of what may transpire. She's also very forthright when it comes to keeping her word.

It's not a comedy, as I was lead to believe by the trailer, but there are quite a few humourous moments. A real gem of a movie.
