Film-Buff Movie Reviews

HERO (2002) ***

With action sequences very similar to CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON, this film is about a Chinese assassin recounting the story of how he defeated the three most notorious assassins of that time. It takes place before China became a unified nation, and the individual kingdoms were at war with each other. However, as the Nameless warrior (Jet Li) tells his story, and retells it, new pieces to what really happened continue to be revealed. Like Rashomon, like Paul Harvey’s “The Rest of the Story”.

I enjoyed the fact that the story kept twisting and turning until we found out the full story, like putting the pieces of a puzzle together. The cinematography during the fight sequences were quite spectacular, but they weren’t enough to make it a great movie. Although, I do recommend seeing it on the big screen.
