Film-Buff Movie Reviews

MR DEEDS (2002) ***

I think Adam Sandler is hilarious. However, his more recent films have left me wanting more, and being slightly disappointed. Although MR DEEDS is a step up from LITTLE NICKY and BIG DADDY, in my opinion.

Most of the big laughs, and there are quite a few, have been given to his support cast. And like his past movies, you’ll see some familiar faces. Ahh, to be one of Adam’s friends ... here’s your career, nicely gift-wrapped. Adam, himself, plays a relatively normal guy who owns a restaurant and aspires to write greeting cards. He hasn’t had one published yet ... probably because his sense of humour is a little off-centre. He speaks the truth, but not always the way Hallmark presents it in a card.

Deeds’ small-town New Hampshire life is turned upside down when he learns that he has inherited $40 billion. He goes to New York City to claim his inheritance and along the way meets Pam Dawson (Winona Ryder) who is actually Babe Bennett, an undercover tabloid reporter trying to scoop the Deeds story. As one thing leads to another, including a number of scenes where Deeds beats the crap out of rude jerks, they end up falling for each other.

Whether you see this movie in the theatre or on video, I’m sure you’ll agree that it’s a great date-movie. It’s funny, it’s sweet, it draws you in, you care about the characters, and stays light and lively ... like Sealtest yogurt.
