Film-Buff Movie Reviews

STAR WARS (1977) ****

This is probably my favourite movie of all-time. It was a ground-breaking science-fiction blockbuster and became a phenomenon. Writer-director George Lucas has created a masterpiece that pays hommage to the swashbuckling films of the past, and has set it in space. It is essentially a tale of good versus evil, but it works on so many different levels. The script is laced with punchy, clever, and humourous dialogue which makes it a treat to watch. The special effects were revolutionary for when the movie was made. Lucas has since pioneered and developed one of the best special effects companies in Industrial Light and Magic. The acting is good. I loved Harrison Ford in the role of Han Solo. He played a self-absorbed, but good-hearted, mercenary to perfection.

The story revolves around Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) who joins Jedi Obi-Wan Kenobi on a mission to Alderaan in order to deliver secret plans to Princess Leia's (Carrie Fisher) father. They enlist the aid of pilot/smuggler Hans Solo to take them, and Luke's two droids, C-3PO and R2-D2, to Alderaan. Meanwhile, Darth Vader has captured the princess and is trying to retrieve the location of the hidden rebel base. The rebels are looking to over-throw the evil Empire and restore their galaxy.

This is a must-see for everyone. It is more than a excellent film, it's an event, a piece of history. It's one of the most wildly successful and influential films in the history of cinema.
