Star Wars Films and TV Series Chronological Order HOW TO REALLY WATCH THE STAR WARS SAGA FILMS AND TV SERIES IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER The BEST, the ULTIMATE, most detailed, and comprehensive chronological viewing order out there! Updated Nov 15, 2023 This is what I consider to be the definitive, fully chronological order in which to watch the Star Wars Saga. Of course, you may choose to omit to your preference or rearrange the order to your taste, especially since I’m including some non-canon TV series and films from the expanded universe in the mix that don’t contradict significant details (other than the Ewoks speaking English in their cartoon series, but then mysteriously forgetting that language in Return of the Jedi). Non-canon films or series will be labeled as “Legends”. And as much as possible, I will include the “year” or time-span in which the series or film occurs. BBY refers to the “Before the Battle of Yavin” which (for novices) is the final space battle at the end of Star Wars: A New Hope. ABY, as you may have guessed, refers to After the Battle of Yavin. There are other lists out there, other so-called “definitive” chronological orders. Some include novels, short-stories, comic books. Some are only about the Star Wars films. Some include films and tv series, but none of the latter go into as specific, all-encompassing viewing detail as this list. This is the best of all of the resources available. As new films or TV series are released, this list will be updated to be as current as possible. There seems to be much debate online regarding which is the best way to watch all of the Star Wars films and TV series. I agree that there is no single right way. I grew up having seen the first ever Star Wars (A New Hope, 1977) in the theatre at the tender age of about three years old. And then having to wait three years for The Empire Strikes Back to premier in theatres, and so on. That is the way I want to introduce the Star Wars universe to my kids. After they experience the Original Trilogy, though, the rest of their viewing order is still up in the air. In May 2020, however, about a month and a half into the COVID-19 pandemic where the world was experiencing various levels of shut downs, my wife and I decided to start Star Wars Day (May The Fourth be with you) early. We discussed that, while both of us have been quite familiar with the Star Wars films, our experience with the Star Wars TV series was limited. We had recently binged The Mandalorian on our new subscription to the Disney Plus streaming service and really enjoyed it. We thought it could be cool to watch all of the currently available Star Wars films and TV series in chronological order. And we did it. And we wrapped them all up in mid-January 2021, watching, on average, one film or one series episode per day in that 8 ½-month time frame. For the most part, the Star Wars timeline is pretty straight-forward, but there are some instances where there is some jumping around. Star Wars: The Clone Wars has an animated movie and a 7-season series that jump around. The Clone Wars series was not released in proper chronological order so please follow the detailed list below. Another example is the final episode of Star Wars: Rebels where you will have to stop that episode before the end, make note of where you left off, watch several movies and shorts, and then come back for that episode’s epilogue. Star Wars: Resistance is in chronological order, but part of the series occurs before The Force Awakens, while other parts of the series occurs after The Last Jedi. And there are some episodes of The Clone Wars series and Resistance that occur congruently with a few of the films. I have placed them in the order than makes the most sense. The series of animated shorts called Forces of Destiny is also a little tricky because some of the episodes feel like they are “deleted scenes” that would take place within one of the Star Wars films. This viewing order listed below will include those Forces of Destiny episodes either prior to or after the film, for simplicity’s sake. But, if you feel like pausing a film to switch over to a Forces of Destiny animated short, and then resume the film, that list will come later. Unless otherwise specified, all films and series can be found on Disney Plus. And all TV series that jump around are based on the Disney Plus episode numbers, not the IMDb episode guide.
