THE CIDER HOUSE RULES (1999) ***

Honestly, I had no desire to see this film, and only saw it because it was nominated for Best Picture. However, I ended up being pleasantly surprised. This is a very nice movie that addresses such subjects as abortion very sympathetically. If anything,it makes you think.

Tobey Maguire and Michael Caine are both very good, but the real stars of this film are the numerous kids at the orphanage. It breaks your heart to see so many children who grow up there. Michael Caine’s character does his best to be a “father” to all of them, and his bedtime farewell is very touching indeed, “Good night you Princes of Maine, you Kings of New England.” At least I think it’s something like that. It’s rather slow-moving, but if you can stand it, it’s well worth it.
