THE HURRICANE (1999) ***1/2

As a work of fiction, this film is great. As a true story, it just isn’t true. After reading a number of articles about the real events that took place, a lot in this film was changed to “Hollywoodize” the story of Rubin “Hurricane” Carter.

What both sides boil down to is a story about a man who was unjustly accused and convicted of murder, and imprisoned for approximately thirty years. Denzel’s performance was superb, as was Vicellous Shannon's, the “kid from Canada”. I liked the parallel stories of Carter, and this boy who went up to study in the Toronto area. They also tied in well together. Well acted and well written this movie tugs at your heart and you find yourself getting really frustrated for Carter who just can’t seem to get a break.
