THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING (2003) ***1/2

THE FELLOWSHIP OF THE RING set the story and characters, THE TWO TOWERS developed the conflict, and finally in THE RETURN OF THE KING everything that these characters have been working and fighting for comes to its climax. And it doesn’t disappoint. Frodo (Elijah Wood), Sam (Sean Astin), and Gollum (Andy Serkis) reach Mordor after much conflict. Aragon (Viggo Mortensen) persuades the men of Rohan to come to Gondor’s aid in battle for Middle Earth. Although it could have ended about fifteen or twenty minutes earlier than it did, but that’s a minor point.

The movie continues to shift from sub-story to sub-story as there are many different, yet connected things going on at the same time. At one point it cut back to Frodo and Sam and I’d completely forgotten about them, I’d become so involved with the other storyline.

Again, the effects are spectacular, the fight sequences are very well done, and it doesn’t look simply like a bunch of computer-generated figures fighting each other in a video game.

One of the best parts of all three films, especially the last two, is the banter and competition, keeping tally of the number of kills, between Legolas (Orlando Bloom) and Gimli (John Rhys-Davies). Throughout the series, just about whatever Gimli says is funny and adds some welcome comic relief.

A most satisfactory conclusion to a very cool trilogy.
