Film-Buff Movie Reviews

xXx (2002) ***1/2

Holy bunch of shmocks-boys! I couldn’t believe my eyes. This movie is so cool. The action starts almost immediately and never really lets up. The stunts and effects are mind-blowing. It’s nice and loud. It is great Summer fun.

The story is rather thin, but that shouldn't be the reason you go see this movie in the first place. If you’re looking for writing brilliance, you won't find it here. One of the only things that bothered me about this movie was the cheesy one-liners that weren't really that clever. Take them away, ad the movie would be even stronger. There were, maybe, one or two that worked, the others were groaners.

The tag line reads "A new breed of secret agent". People have been calling this the James Bond for the new millennium. I'd have to agree. Whereas James Bond still may have a place in the theatres, Vin Diesel plays his character, Xander Cage, with attitude. He's rough around the edges and we can relate to him a bit easier than the suave and debonaire Bond. But that's not to say this film is not filled with some very cool spy gadgets. They are a plenty. The cars are pretty cool, too.

Xander Cage, an extreme sports athlete/criminal, pushing the envelope, who has an underground web site where he does all kinds of extreme stunts to make a statement. Boycotts and picket signs are not for him. He'd rather steal cars from rich hypocrites ad find creative ways of crashing them. Meanwhile, NAS is losing field agents at an alarming rate. One proposal is to recruit the craziest, most extreme criminals and put them to work as secret agents. They are very good at what they do, and are completely expendable. Cage is picked up and is given the choice of either going to prison or repaying his debt to society by gathering information as a spy.

We can look forward to at least one, if not two sequels. Let's just hope they live up to this first movie.
